Background Information On Q Magazine

Q magazine: The Website

Firstly i am going to look at the website from Q magazine http://www.qthemusic.com/ magazines have a lot of media behind them. this is Q website. 

Q website has lots of different feature, i think Q want it to be like an extra magazine to the ones who read it. the website has adverts like the magazine has, it has all the different sections/headings at the top that you can go to different websites. it shows what the magazine is of this moth and the content and special effects. that want to get you involved in the website site so they have a weekly vote that you can to to see who everyones favorite is. it has all the updates on modern/rock/pop music news that people may like to know on what going on in the music industry. the website also shows extra feature that may not be published in the magazine like top photo taken at gigs or new articles that bloggers may right and extra info. 

This is the bar at the top of the website that shows what you can go on, Q magazine has a variety of media related stuff  that they can do. they have a radio station that they play the type of music that there magazine is all about and this give me an idea for my magazine i could involve a radio station with my music magazine. i have listen to the radio and as i am really in to the type of music that they have played.  here is a link if you would like to listen to Q radio http://radioplayer.qthemusic.com/ .

Under the features column there is info about festivals the best ones around what the line up are, new albums artist that are coming back and magazine more music and lots of different other stuff. 

 Q magazine have a youtube page which i checked out to see what was on there and again lots of behind the seances stuff like with artists on there magazine http://www.youtube.com/user/Q4music  interviews go on there that are really interesting of you a big music fan you get to know the real artist. 

Each day they update what they think is the 'Track Of The Day' today it was Baxter Dury - Isabel. underneath is Q's top 50 what is in there charts. Q magazine has a music TV channel so there are together. 

Some thing that i love is that they show lots of gigs when there on where you can buy tickets and all that, i love this because i am a big gigs fan i love going to gigs everything about it i love. so this web page is brilliant for me. there also have a merchandise page that they sell lots of different band and artist merch for all types of people hat love this music. they have a sign up where you can be part of the Q family. 

They have a gallery that includes photos from there gigs, and festivals. it also has photo shoot from artists and just extra photo they you properly wouldn't of seen with out looking at this website.

Music Magazine: Research and Planning, Music Genre: What type of music am i going to have in my magazine?

This is Q magazine the magazine that i am using as my base for my music magazine. this is the type of music magazine that i read so that why i want to create a magazine like this. i am in to pop rock music and this magazine genre is pop rock so it would make sense to create a magazine like it. This image below is of a front cover on Q magazine that i have annotated.

There is a collection of music magazine magazines that i know about ii read a few of them like Kerrang and NME but i haven't read the others but i have read reviews about them. the type of music genre that these magazine are about are rock, old rock so 60/70/80's. There is pop and heavy metal these magazine are all main stream that all include artists that are in the charts and a lot of people have heard of. The media i a great way to publish music and get people listening to it. Q magazine and lots f other music magazine has many different sources of media that will help the music they talk about in there magazine advertised for example Q magazine has a radio station, they have a music TV channel, obviously a magazine they produce CD's that they sell and give out free with they magazines that have a selection of there favorite artists. they also are on the social networking and have a twitter account and Facebook account that they use for advertising and marketing and telling people about what there doing as a magazine company. Q magazine have a apple app that can be used on ipod touches, iphones, and ipads.

Final Contents Design 

 

This is my final contents page, i have tried to make it as similar to my front cover as possible so i used the same font in the title and logo. And for the contents info i used again the same font as the sub-headings. i used the same titles in the contents and added some more so the similar and look like they come from the same magazine, which i think i have achieved. I went out and took a selection on photos round south downs college so i think they look all kind of same feel to them, some of them i ask the people in the photo to do that but others i try to make it feel natural as if they were all ready doing that. i again has added the south downs college logo to it to make sure they that is what my college magazine is representing.  i have used the aqua blue to the colour scheme because i didn't what the magazine to look to girly with all the pink font so by changing it the a blue colour i hoping that it will apply to both audiences girls and boys. 

I learnt a lot with this Preliminary Task that we had to do before our final music magazine because i was new to using In Design on apple macs, so i didn't know much about it obviously there was buttons that your could work out to used but most of the things our teacher taught us and it just so happens that most of out class hadn't used In Design either. the are a few techniques i learnt like how to put text in a box and change the colour, font and size, to add and edit photos and also spin them to to give it an effect. i learnt to do lots of other things too on In Design but there just little bit the for me will help improve the final look of my work. What Of what you have learnt can you bring to your music magazine? well i think a lot of the techniques and little tricks i can use to make my music look really good, my target for my music magazine is to make it look like it can be in the shop shelf's and to make it look professional and not like it has been made at college.

Preliminary Task: Front Cover, Continued 

This is my final cover of my student magazine, i am happy with it as i think it looks i little bit like a real magazine that would be in colleges. i have use the pink, black and white colour theme as i think it stands out from the black and white photo. i have added the south downs college logo at the bottom so it is nice and clear that this magazine is representing the college. at the bottom right there is the issue number and date so the people reading know when it is and that it is up to date. i have the large main heading is in big clear white and pink. It says 'MOVING TO UNI New Friends New City New Experience' i made this my main heading because the audience which is the college students can relate to it and may need advice about uni and it is a big change from college and a whole new environment so i what this magazine to help them, and college second year students will be thinking and choosing there uni so i am hoping that this information will help them. but overall i am pleased with my final front cover. 

Underneath is my contents flat plan its it just a brief plan on what i want to put in my contents and how everything is going to be place. i think i can be creative in my contents as it doesn't have a certain criteria like the front cover. i choose to have a selection of four college related images. i large title i want to have at the top, i want there to be a continuos theme through out the whole magazine so it looks complete. the content of the contents will be on the right. Also i have decided to advertise an offer because i am hope that it will grab peoples attention and that they will want to read it more if they get discount of something.

Starting The College Magazine: SDC LIFESTYLE

This is what i did today, i started on my college magazine on InDesign, we got taught how to do the simple stuff in this program as many of us had not of used it before. I chose this picture because there is enough room at the top for the masthead. I have added a tag line and cover lines, in the font of Thonburi because it was similar to the masthead font which was Confortaa. Then secondly for my masthead i used a bright hot pink as it is bight and noticeable then i added the bottom shadow to make it noticeable. i added the South Downs logo on to it because i thought that was important as i am representing south downs college with my magazine. i learnt to use lots of different tools on InDesign this program is pretty similar to Paint. Macromedia fireworks and Photoshop so i got the hang on it quickly, i enjoy using it and all the different tools. To the left the is the tool bar used a lot to change to the  colours of texts, to move objects. You can cut pictures out, add the photos to the back round and fill the page.

College Magazine 

My magazine is a student south downs college magazine. it is aimed at college students to know whats going on round the college and articles related to there subjects and interesting things to know in or out of college, i want to create a magazine the students will actually read and find interesting.


My cover lines will be lines like: ' Moving to uni, living alone' 'Exam tips to help you pass' 'Getting your coursework done on time' 'Quick and easy meals for under a fiver' these are so problems and dilemmas that students go through in there young life, so why not have a magazine that helps them with that. the name i have chosen to give my magazine is 'SDC lifestyle' because this is a student male and female student lifestyle magazine that will help them with situations in a young adults life. Other names i was going to choose was 'college' but i thought that was boring and could be for any college when i wanted my magazine to be south downs students because i go there and this is the college i know about. 'south downs times' was another name i was going to choose but it sounds to much like a new paper and not many young people read newspapers where as magazine i know that a lot of young people read them because they interest them.

i have looked on word to see if there is any fonts i like, i found a few but i haven't found any thing i definatly want to use because i haven't downloaded any yet or look on the apple indesign. the first one i liked i just wasn't sure on the little marks on it, it looks like a magazine font i'm just not sure it suitable for my magazine. the second one i decided to look at because it looked hand written but i don't think i'm going to use it because it look to school like an i know coming to college i don't want to be back at school so having something like that in my magazine may not appeal to everyone, as i don't want it just to be a magazine about learning i want it to be a magazine about other stuff like student problems outside college too as college help and supports students. the third one i liked a lot i just not sure a scruffy notebook magazine is the theme i was going for i think i want a nice neat sophisticated magazine. the last one out of all of the ones i looked at was my favorite because it bold, simple and eye catching.

The tag lines i was thinking for my student magazine are 'south downs college, the life a a student' or south downs college, to help you make the most out of college life' those where the two i came up with but i am going to ask people opinion on them to see what they think about them because as my magazine is for all students i want to see and put in this magazine what they want in there and what they want to read. i'm not sure if they sound cheesy or not so asking people will help with resolving that. 

The time that i think i want to make and releases are seasonally so four times a year every three months.  because that means people wont get bored of it and it can relate to the holidays that are going on at the time. it gives time for it to be wrote and published. other reasons are then that it can be quite long with lots of different sections in and better quality.

• What type of magazine and target audience has IPC been associated with over the years?

IPC magazine are aimed at a mass market as all there magazines are for different people and they all have different themes, because they range rom music to men to horse riding to fashion. but each indervidual magazine has a target market.

• Why might IPC be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine?

IPc will be appropriate to publish a new music magazine because they have the experence as they have own and make loads of magazines, they know what a magzine needs and what intrests readers they are very diverse instituion. IPC are a up to date company so they know whats going on in the music industry which mean they would know about all the top relese that month and new musitions and bands. they are most well know for there music and fashion magazines so i think IPC would be expeccially good with thoses areas but also any other areas to as they have so many magzine is didernt types of themes.

• What sorts of genres of music/types of magazines might they be likely to publish?

There are a main music magazine that IPC produce, which is this magazine NME. the type of music NME have in there magazine is Rock/ Indie that is quite main stream, the target audience is young boys and men to because they  used to read it when they were a student and it still  has the music that they listen to. there is a large audience for rock and i think why that is there main music genre, but they also add different types of music ta attract different types of people they normal add music like hip hop, pop, modern popular music. 

 

• Why might alternative publishers like bauer be appropriate? 
  
  
  Bauer sell magazines cheaper than IPC so this would attract a different audience people that dont want to spend lots on magazines. Bauer i think are better at selling reallife magazines film, tv or puzzle where as on the other hand IPC sell more music, fashion and sports. Teen Magazines: Are they suitable?

To what extent should magazines be held responsible for the social ramifications of the representations they offer?

 

I think magazine should be responsible of what they publish in there magazine and it should be suitable for the age range, which in the teenage girls magazine is 10-15 year olds. There was a study done by 'The Sunday Telegraph' about how lots of teenage magazines certain sexually explicit material that may cross the industry's editorial code. Girls are being signalised in so many ways most of them the media, with games, TV, films, magazines, fashion and other industries. these are a few heading and title you get in teen magazines; Bliss: 'boosting you dating rating', 'vodka made her nightmare' and ;his secret snog thoughts' other magazine also had the same type of titles like Shout: 'hot lad issue' 'make him date you' + Sugar: 'new dress new boobs' been kissed been dissed' + 'make him fancy you' 'never have another bad snog' These are just a few line in teenage girls magazines. I have been looking it lots of teen magazine to see what is in there and I saw lots of images of topless men and men with only a object covering there bits I would expect think in a older women's magazine not a young teenage girls magazine. I also magazine have website so I thought I would look on there and i find competitions 'on how pretty you are?' where girl can post pictures of them self and get voted, girls don't have much self confidence as it is so having competitions like these are probably not making girls feel very good about their self and are not teenage girls magazine meant to do the opposite and boost their confidence and make them feel better about them self's. I read lots of teen magazines for this research and found that it feels like there is nothing to life except always looking good and pulling the hottest guys, many photos I found are not cute and girly but instead very provocative and are wearing very sexy girls clothes that I would to be found in men's magazines. Has the meaning of sexy changed? What does the word sexy mean to young girls? Is sexy different to what the writers of the magazine different to the girls of 10 to 15 years old? teenagers girls are wearing clothes that I would never thought I would see being worn on young girls, when I was little I loved dressing up in my mum’s clothes and wearing lots of pink and Barbie girly clothes, but now in magazine and on the streets I see young girls wear low tops, bras on show, short skimpy skirts, shorts and dresses and wearing leather and high heels. is the media and magazines distorting what beauty means? so in conclusion yes i think the magazine companies are responsible for what they put in there magazines.

Breif History Of IPC, Timeline

1853: The Field, this became one of the largest newspapers in the Europe.

1900: there had three more titles that became part of IPC those were Yachting Monthly, Cage Birds and Motor Boat.

1911: Womens Weekly became "our motto - practical and useful' by the editorial banner. And the first copies of Golfers Monthly came out.

1900's: The first magazine to be published after world war one, Homes & Gardens

1921: Ideal Homes magazine came, the new opposition to Homes & Gardens.

1926: Women & Home had appeared to the market, and had grow to a 144 page magazine in 1929.

1932: the launch of Womens Own

1930's: more magazines that were released were Caravan, Stamp Magazine and Prediction.

1940: this Womens Own, magazine caver got called war time art.

1952: there was a big music sence, so the new music magazine New Musical Express was launched now knowm as NME.

Magazines Aimed At Teenage Girls

I have chosen five teen girl magazines: 'Bliss' 'Top of the Pops' 'Mizz' 'Sugar' and 'Shout' that are aimed at young girls in the UK as i have chosen British magazines. Teen magazines are aimed at teens so i think the content should be suitable for teens. The first magazine in going to talk about is 'Shout' as i think this is the most unsuitable magazine of them all because of what is in there '8 steps to kissable lips' for girls that read this magazine, im guessing 10 to 14 year old there is quite a wide range and changes of a girl in those age. with a sub-heading with this on which is the most noticeable and eye catching with the bold number 8 and the different colours and fonts. There is another heading in the bottom that says 'what boys really think about us' it isn't as noticeable as the other heading but it is still on the front cover, i think this story that is in the magazine to make girl feel really self conscious about them selfs because as teenager your always thinking of what other people are thinking of you and when magazines like this want you to know what boys think about you i think its adds more pressure to that teenage girl. As i am being a big fan of the american TV show 'Gossip Girl' i started watching it when i was 14/15 because that when it started, but when i did watch it i only just thought it was suitable it is '15' certificate anyway so having one of the actors of that TV show on there is advertising and promoting young teenage girls to what the show when really its not suitable. 

The next magazine i saw something that i didn't feel should go in a teen magazine 'flirt with fashion, be the girl all the lads fancy' with this i think there wanting girl to dress really provocative to get the boys attention. there the two magazines where things stood out to me as not suitable for a teen magazine. 

But the other magazines i read as a young teenager and thought they included the right content for young girls magazines.

Magazine And Target Audiences

Company one of the most popular women's life style magazines in the UK. there are many conventions on this magazine that most women's magazines will have, and these show the audience

How the magazine cover appeals to women by using the conventions of cover design. Firstly the theme colour they have use light pink, navy, white and gray which are all wintery colours because it is a november episode. Another thing is by having Fearne Cotten on the front cover, Fearne is a iconic young lady that many girls/young women look up to, as she has does many jobs presenter, radio DJ, designs her own clothes with very.com.

 Compared to other magazines she is not posing in a raunchy way which shows this magazine is aimed at girls that are not so interested in looking sexy but looking good instead and fashion. this may interest different types of women. Again fearne appeals to the younger generation/ young women because they can relate to her, she is not one of those celebrities that goes out and gets drunk and drugs really she has a good reputation so a good young lady for people to aspire to unlike some other celebs.
There are lot of other conventions in the magazine like the title behind her head that is just not on women's magazine that is just a normal conventions of every magazine. Price by advertising it in a button shape makes it stand out, so more women will by it because its cheap. The sub-titles also show what appeals to women's, as they will read the story inside. Nearly all women's magazines have some kind of sex story in it on this magazine it is 'Have sex, Look skinny' this is in caps in two different colours to make it stand out, as they maybe a popular story for people to read or that women could possibly be interested in and also in smaller writing underneath its says 'best. positions. ever' i think that there is full stops between the words because they think they know that they have the best information on this subject. 
 By including other celebrities in the magazine can attract a larger audience 'Justin Timberlake "i'm done with music"' this obviously isn't as important on the magazine as other things because it is put in small writing at the bottom, but again this can attracted justin Timberlake fans to read the magazine.
 '175 winter looks we love' is but in big bold caps writing, looks like a painted font, this is the main sub-title because it is the largest and straight alone the middle, this shows that the magazine is very in fashion like i said before and there target audience is going to be interested in that as women do like to read on the latest fashion, best bargains, greatest looks, what the Celebes are wearing, what looks best for the there body shape young women are all about fashion especially the type of audience that reads these magazines. By having real life stories in magazines are all ways interesting and gets lots of reads people women like to know what going on but are not always interested in the newspaper so if there is news and life stories in these there are interested. Class, i think the class that this magazine is aimed for is middle class young women form 16-35.

• Putting different and more celebs: on the front cover to get people to read it, lots of people are interested in celebrities life so the more celebs that in in the magazine the more people are going to read especially if they like the celebs.
• Iconic artist: by putting iconic music artists on there people how are interested about music are going to read it because then you get all types of celebs that everyones like you need different genres to. 
• Pullout: so you can see what you et free with the magazine may it be a poster or a free gift, all drawing in the buyers. 
• Design: can be a big box at the bottom that shows and exclusive interview or story, they normally are full of bold different colours as well as it offers 'lots more' something out of the ordinary magazine. 
• Cover lines: can be all different for the types of stories , they are normally distributed around the main image round the edge with out distracting you from the main image.
• Dateline: has the date, issue, and normal price of the magazine, monthly magazine normal are in stands a month before they are issued.
• Selling line: is normal a short sharp description, of the magazine main marketing point (a little slogan).

Why i think blogger with be useful in my course work


I think blogger will be useful with my media course work in many ways. Media is surrounded by gadgets and on the web so that's my first reason, by doing all our work on the internet we can get used to how things work in the media world. Another reason why I think blogger is a great idea is as being a youth and teenager I use a lot of social networking websites which is very similar to this, so I can relate to this website almost as a social networking for coursework. I like this as well because at school a lot of work is done on paper and was being marked that way so it's nice to find different ways of doing your work and presenting it. Another good thing about blogger is that you can edit your posts at any time to change then or improve them. You can access blogger anytime, which will be very useful to me as then when ever i have any free time i can just get on with my coursework.
